Press Release

26th May 2006
Sir Bobby backs St James’

Sir Bobby Robson CBE today pledged his support for William Leech 55+, subsidiary of Persimmon Homes, the UK’s leading housebuilder, as he officially opened St James’ Court, a revolutionary Gateshead development for the over 55s.

St James’ Court has been designed specifically for the mature buyer who doesn’t fit the ‘retirement home’ category, but wants to downsize in order to make the most of life. It is William Leech’s first development since  Persimmon acquired the brand in 2001.

Unveiling a plaque, presenting an award and toasting purchasers from the development was how Sir Bobby spent the morning, enforcing the William Leech 55+ ethos that life really does begin after 55.

Northumbria University students Lucy Marlor and Nicki Lindsey, who were also in attendance at the event, proudly accepted certificates from the football legend after winning William Leech 55+’s ‘Design for Life’ awards.  Presented with the task of designing St James’ Court’s communal living areas, the thoughtful design of the students’ work perfectly suited the taste of the target market.

Commenting on the day, Kevin Thubron for William Leech 55+, said, “We were delighted to welcome Sir Bobby here today. He is a fantastic ambassador for us because he personifies our brand and represents our customer base.”

The population is ageing considerably, with over-50s counting for 45 per cent of total consumer spending in the UK. The number of people aged 50 plus has already grown by 24 per cent within the last four decades and is predicted to grow by a further 37 per cent by 2031. William Leech has adapted to this trend by providing homes that specifically cater for active people in their 50s, 60s and 70s.

As Kevin explained, “People in their 50s, 60s and 70s represent a dynamic, sophisticated marketplace for us. They typically have much more financial and physical freedom than older or younger generations and, increasingly, a healthier, more active lifestyle. As far as housing goes, they may own a second home abroad and require a ‘lock up and go’ property in the UK, for example.

“Nevertheless, we know that stability is also important and that financial planning, improved security and maintenance services are equally high on their agenda. That’s why we have put together the William Leech offering here as St James’, which combines bespoke lifestyle services with a reasonable price, communal facilities and excellent access to shops and transport.”

St James’ Court comprises 63 stylish one and two bedroom apartments in the first of a number of planned developments across the region.  Prices start from £96,950.

Facilities include a concierge service, communal garden room, functions lounge with catering facilities, laundry, entry-phone system, security alarm to each apartment and lift service to all floors.  A management company will also be employed to offer 24-hour assistance to residents.

Notes to editors:

Established in the North East in 1932 by William Leech (now Sir William Leech), the company flourished in residential development and built up an excellent reputation in the region.  Later expanding across the UK, the company became the Leech Group and broadened its expertise into commercial property as well as residential.  Most famously, Leech Homes is remembered for initiating the building of Cramlington ‘new town’ in the 1960’s.
